What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
