The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
