The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
