The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is facing drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Shows Zero Dryness

A recent update from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is free from dry or drought conditions. This development came after multiple above-normal rainfall that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point featured severe and lethal winter storms that pummeled the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January finally erased those final dry conditions.

A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern

Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow place it at only about 70% of the historical norm.

This snowpack, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials point out that it is premature to make predictions for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to maintaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
