Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, authorities reported.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
