Gareth Southgate Discloses Priorities on Mentoring Young People Instead of Football Management

Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be tough to match the special mission he felt as head of the Three Lions.

Southgate expressed his aim to focus his energy toward working with the next generation and countering what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Fresh Opportunities Away from Football

Speaking on air, he was prompted regarding rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Ahead of the release of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, he emphasized that he is deeply committed about setting examples for the youth, utilizing experiences from his time as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader feels that his experience leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Speaking from his experience as a father, Southgate commented: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

He insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often emphasizes division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

The manager’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present further insights on leadership and public spirit inspired by his remarkable time in football.
