A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
We are verifying images and video posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
