Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now intends to appear with the former governor in areas where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how critical this election is,” Adams remarked.

Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated candidate debate.
