Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS ought to be enough to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
